Because the main risk factors for kidney disease are other illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular issues, it’s important to maintain good nutrition and incorporate physical activity into your lifestyle to prevent kidney disease as well.

  • Choose heart-healthy foods such as fresh fruits, fresh or frozen vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods
  • Use herbs and spices for seasoning food instead of salt
  • Eat small meals throughout the day
  • Limit your consumption of processed foods (often foods that come in a package) and sweets
  • Drink more water and less soda and juice
  • Limit your alcohol intake

  • Walking is a great way to get in shape; begin at a moderate pace for 20-30 minutes at least three times per week
  • Work exercise into your routine by parking farther away or by walking up the stairs
  • Join a gym
  • Check with your doctor before starting

  • Quit smoking
  • Visit your doctor at least once a year for a checkup
  • Have your blood pressure checked at least twice per year after the age of 12
  • If diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure, take your medication as directed
